Agave attenuata is also known as foxtail, lion’s tail or swan’s neck agave because its fluffy yellowish flower stalks curve downward, and maybe up again, to about 6 feet tall. Agave cernua, Agave debaryana, Agave glaucescens, Agave kellocki, Agave pruinosa There are several cultivars available including ones with variegated leaves and bluer leaves. Agave attenuata: This is a popular spineless variety, also known as the foxtail or dragon-tree agave.

Parts of the plant can be made into agave nectar, tequila, and the fiber known as sisal. Spineless, fleshy, ovate, light gray to pale yellowish-green evergreen leaves (to 28” long) form a large symmetrical rosette.

However it is not particularly cold hardy and is easily damaged by frosts below 27°F. After 10-12 years individual rosettes bloom with an impressive ten foot tall foxtail-like inflorescence. Then it will die, without forming offsets. This fast growing, adaptable, soft-leaved agave has no spines. This agave is very popular in gardens because of its lovely form, adaptability and quick growth. The species epithet comes from the Latin word 'attenuo' which in botanical usage has come to refer to the gradual reduction of the leaf as it tapers to a slender point.

Bloom Description: Yellow green to white

Agave attenuata is one of only a dozen or so Agave sp. The central stem will also sprout other rosettes in time. It grows around 4 to 5 feet tall and a bit wider. Rosettes die after flowering but there are plenty of seeds and pups on the inflorescence.

Winter hardy to USDA Zones 10-12 where it grows best in a sandy/gritty, medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Agave 'Blue Glow' is a slow-growing evergreen succulent which produces elegant rosettes of blue-green, chalky leaves with finely toothed margins adorned with a golden and red ribbon. Tolerates poor soils.

There are several different cultivars with varied leaf colors.

Water: Medium Plant leaves will shrivel in dry conditions, but will revive when given moisture.
