Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin picks up right where the original game left off, as Raz and company set off to rescue Truman Zanotto. Review: Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin. The first game was a platformer, as its full sequel will be. In addition, the limited number of powers leaves most of your interaction with the environment feeling not all that unique compared to other first-person VR games. You won’t feel like you’re really there, but you will get a nice sense of being in the world of Psychonauts.Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin isn’t a true successor to the first game, that’s coming with Psychonauts 2. It does this well, with the usual excellent writing expected of Double Fine. The puzzles themselves mostly involve triggering something within the mind of Lili, Sasha, Milla, or Coach Oleander to snap them out of the trance that they’re in. I still laughed and appreciated some of the smaller details present throughout the game, it’s just hard to not want a little more out of it by the end.Copyright PSNStores.com. Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin – PSVR Review 2 Mar, 2017 in PSVR / Reviews tagged Millla / Oleander / Psychonauts / rhombus / ruin / Sasha / vr by Grizz When it first appeared on the scene, Psychonauts was a bit of an enigma. I just wish the rest of the game had more moments like it.It should of course be noted that the original cast has returned to reprise their roles and, considering how long it’s been, they all deliver great performances. Clever and charming in equal measure, Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin is a decent enough, if overly lean and uneven excursion into VR … Before long the group is kidnapped and completely separated from one another.
The graphics were actually quite impressive for a PSVR game, with the Psychonauts art style lending itself very well to the technology. Nearly twelve years after the initial release of Psychonauts, the Rhombus of Ruin has emerged to serve as connective tissue between the original game and the upcoming – long-awaited – sequel. It still presents an interesting location to explore, with small amounts of world-building to tide people over until the sequel, but it feels like a bit of a missed opportunity considering just how creative the original game is. With the ability to explore, Raz will need to find his friends and help break each of them out of their own hypnosis-like state. It’s clear Double Fine still has a firm grasp of the world of Psychonauts and its characters. This spinoff is more like a point-and-click adventure game, which Double Fine has a ton of experience with.
If you’ve played other point-and-click adventures then this won’t be too surprising, but some of the puzzles here can be a bit obtuse, and if you aren’t tracking the thought patterns that the developer expects, it can get very frustrating, very quickly. This is the exception though, but due to the game not giving you too many clues outside of repeated phrases that point you at the ultimate goal, not the steps it takes to get there, it can only take one or two of these to ruin a lot of the fun. That said, the final sequence of the game provides an excellent use of VR and serves as a creative reinterpretation of the original game’s Memory Vaults. Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin Review. Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin Review (PSVR) Twelve years from Double Fine's acclaimed platformer, Psychonauts, released to worldwide acclaim; Tim Schafer and his team have finally brought us a continuation of Raz's journey - Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin.
Not only that, but this particular Memory Vault gives pretty important information, not just for the original Psychonauts, but for the sequel as well. Given the simplicity of the experience, the controls work well, without the need for motion controllers. With this, Raz can see through the eyes of other people – or fish – and explore most of what’s hidden deep in the Rhombus of Ruin.
Things, of course, go a little wrong on the mission, and Raz will have to use all of these abilities in order to find his friends, solve puzzles, and unlock the mystery of the Rhombus of Ruin. The story here isn’t all that deep, but it does keep you engaged and interested throughout the few hour runtime. In addition to Clairvoyance, Raz can eventually use Telekinesis, Pyrokinesis, and PSI-Blast to interact with the environment and solve puzzles.
