The Gin Craze was a period in the first half of the 18th century when the consumption of gin increased rapidly in Great Britain, especially in London. Sold for pennies in taverns and squalid gin shops, on street corners and even in jails, gin was the original opiate of the masses, plunging England’s capital into chaos and giving rise to the first modern drug scare. I can find no definition that seems to fit the context. The historical narrative runs up to the present day and is supplemented by many and varied facts about the production of and uses of gin and related spirits. I’ll try to briefly tackle the things that bother me in her work: You’d think a book about the havoc gin wreaked on London between 1720 and 1750 would be totally awesome; Ms. Warner goes out of her way to prove me wrong. A interesting social history of the"gin craze" of the early 1700's and the various "Gin Laws" passed by Parliment from 1729 till 1751. I used to think that gin all tasted the same, very nice, but absolutely not a jot of difference between them and nothing to warrant spending lots of dosh on a bottle when a cheap one was just as good. Though many similar drinks were available and alcohol consumption was considerable at all levels of society, gin caused the greatest public concern.
