This book does not downplay the horrors of slavery, but you walk away in the end inspired and uplifted by the stories of those who risked everything to do what was right.A comprehensive and illuminating history of the beginnings of the underground railroad and the push for emancipation. Choose your king today. He regularly reviews books for the Wall Street Journal. Learned a lot of history of all the states and their laws about slavery, all the religious denominations and their attitudes about it, and many famous men in positions of power and their mixed (but usually horrible) attitudes.3 1/2 stars. Overall. )Bound For Canaan is Fergus Bordewich's harrowing and heroic tale of the Underground Railroad that liberated thousands of fugitive slaves in mid 19th c. Names like Coffin, Loguen, DeBaptiste, Gerrit Smith and Rankin belong in the pantheon w Tubman and Douglass.Pretty good overview of the history of the underground railroad. Meticulously researched from original sources. This book was a bit too academic for my liking. Besides the sweep of the story of the system to conduct runaway slaves from the south to the northern states or Canada you learn detailed snippets of history: Great book. This particular book however very clearly earns the title "definitive" and I plan to hang on to it because it covers the subject as thoroughly (in my opinion) as one book can, it has a large bibliography, it contains many micro-biographies of key individuals involved in the underground railroad, recounts many escape stories, describes the general attitudes about race in the northern states and Canada and it puts the history of the underground railroad in perspective. It does contain a lot of information and most of it was very engaging.
