Because of my love for this movie which, as of this writing, I've probably already viewed both Parts I & II in its entirety at least 5 times, I was inspired to see other Chinese and Korean movies based upon their warlord past histories. marvellous 4 hour epic with an epic climactic battle ; my only gripe are that the subtitles were quite fast to read. The result is closer to TROY than ALEXANDER THE GREAT; especially the chap who shoulder-charges the horses.

What I love about Chinese films is the scale of them, they don't just do big, they do huge! otherwise, Terrific. This is very like a classical RPG video game rendered into film form, only based on history and far more approachable by all types, with characters on all sides you can sympathize with.

The first chapter of legendary director John Woo's two-part action epic centring on politics and war in 3rd century China. Happy viewing. And it was a fascinating piece of Chinese history, well done in every other way. I must admit at over 4 hours for the feature I thought it might drag in places but it kept me completely hooked. Whilst the scale and photography in this film are excellent, especially on Blu-Ray, I personally cannot abide a potentially spectacular war film being ruined by a few leading characters who have the miraculous capacity to single-handedly slaughter large numbers of the enemy, who stand around the hero waiting for their turn to be killed - it's just so ridiculous that it ruins an otherwise spectacular film. The film is a true masterpiece: the characters are fun, the action set-pieces are jaw-dropping, the emotional subplots are very moving and the overall production values are off the chart compared to a few other Chinese wuxia films I've watched and enjoyed. Perhaps the finest film of this genre ever. The movie is a blend of martial arts action and large scale action involving armies and there are also scenes of individuals relating to each other and building friendships.

If the Western view of cinematic war is centred on morale courage and physical strength (see GLADIATOR) RED CLIFF shows the Chinese pleasure in clever ruses, self-sacrifice and culture. etc.Masterpiece, you must have this in your collection! I truly cringed through the battle scenes in this movie because of it. Then I found out more and wanted to see the whole thing. During the battle scenes, I wondered how many horses died making this piece of entertainment. Part one ends with a to be continued and part two is worth the whole 5 hours. Don't be put off by the TV showings of this film, they have been hacked to hell and back to fit the schedules.

There are some incredible battle sequences and you wonder how they were able to film such large scale action sequences. This epic masterpiece must be seen in the two parts. The music is fantastic too (buy the soundtrack if you can)and adds to the depth of the whole movie.

I acctually had this on both DVD and BluRay, I made the same mistake both times. A long and very involved film that deserves all the accolades heaped on it. The cinematography is excellent and story well written. An epic movie dramatising historical characters/heros. Red Cliff continues to stand out as the best of the best. This is not the International version, but the original Chinese version, Part I and Part II, and it is almost 5 hours long. How John Woo shot this is nothing short of astounding.
